The most boring AI services are the easiest money.

Making money · 4 minute read

Everyone selling "make money with AI" wants you building chatbots and cinematic videos. Meanwhile, the money that actually shows up on time comes from jobs so dull nobody makes content about them. Here is one from our own build log.

The spreadsheet rescue

A small business had a customer list that had been abused for years. Exported from three different tools, typed by four different people, never once cleaned. The job: make it usable before an email campaign went out.

Rows in the original file

Afternoon, start to delivered

The work itself: AI matched near duplicate names ("Jim Smith," "James Smith," "jsmith") and flagged them for merging, standardized every phone number and address format, split "name" into first and last, and flagged emails that would obviously bounce. A human, meaning you, spot checks the merges, makes the judgment calls, and delivers one clean file with a one page summary of what changed.

895 rows in. 636 clean rows out. The client did not see keystrokes. They saw a mailing list that finally worked, and they saw it the same week they asked. That is an outcome, priced like an outcome, and it is repeat business, because their list will be a mess again by spring.

Why boring wins

Two more boring goldmines

Bookkeeping prep. Not bookkeeping itself, which needs credentials, but the prep: a year of bank transactions sorted into categories, flagged for the actual bookkeeper, delivered as one tidy file before tax season. Same skills as the spreadsheet rescue, wrapped around a deadline every business shares.

Grant prep for nonprofits. Small nonprofits skip grants because the paperwork is brutal. Gathering documents, drafting answers from last year's applications, and formatting to spec is dull, structured work that AI accelerates enormously, and it is tied directly to money arriving. Grateful clients, real budgets.
